The Schiphol Airport, close to Amsterdam, is Europe’s third busiest airport. Around 70 million passengers travel via Schiphol every year, and the number continues to grow.

In 2019, works started on the construction of a new pier to further increase the airport’s capacity, with an additional 8 gates. Stylish and sustainable, the new Pier A is designed to offer extra comfort to passengers.
Consisting of 55,000 m² spread over 3 floors, the building had very specific safety requirements and very ambitious goals in terms of sustainability. It was also very important that the airport could continue to function as usual during the works. The corridor that connects the new Pier A with the current airport was built offsite in several sections. The final assembly was done smoothly, causing little inconvenience.
Both in the design phase and during construction, the main focus was to make the new Pier A as green as possible, focusing on energy efficiency and the sustainable use of materials. The roof plays an important role on this: rainwater will be collected and used to flush the toilets, and about 5,000 m² of solar panels will be installed on top of the technical room and on the sloping connections between the pier and the gates..
UltraPly TPO thermoplastic single-ply roofing membrane was chosen to waterproof the roof of the new Pier A, which has a total surface equal to 23 tennis courts. With outstanding resistance to heat, UV radiation and ozone, the UltraPly TPO membrane is durable, energy-efficient and provides a suitable base for the solar system.
The roofing team that carried out the installation was trained by Holcim Building Envelope before the start of the project and the company’s Technical department provided regular follow-up at the request of the general contractor.
